What is Heart Blockage?

A heart block is when the electrical impulses that control the beating of the heart muscle are disrupted. The most serious type of heart blockage known as a complete, or third degree, heart blockage will have symptoms, but often those with less serious heart blockage can have symptoms too.

There are three types of heart blockage:

  • First-degree heart blockage is the mildest form and usually doesn’t cause symptoms.
  • Second-degree heart blockage has a slower – and sometimes irregular – heart rhythm
  • Third-degree heart blockage (complete atrioventricular block) is the most severe form.
